Plenty of country collaborations feel inevitable. Luke Bryan and Luke Combs might be one of them.
During his week as co-host of Backstage Country, Bryan told John Shomby about “Finders Keepers,” the collaboration between the two Lukes featured on his ninth studio album, Signs. Bryan admitted he had not expected the song to come together quite this way, making the story behind it one of the more entertaining moments during his co-hosting stint.
Bryan explained that he received “Finders Keepers” late in the recording process. Rather than spending a long time sitting with the song, he decided to take a chance and record it.
Luke Bryan Took a Rare Gamble
According to Bryan, he does not normally record a song without spending significant time getting comfortable with it. But something about “Finders Keepers” convinced him to roll the dice.

“I had a song get pitched to me called ‘Finders Keepers,’ and I just rolled the dice and recorded it without living with it that long. And typically, I haven't done that in my career a lot,” Bryan explained.
After recording his vocals, Bryan sent the track to Combs to see what he thought. “I sent it over to Luke Combs and said, ‘Hey, man, what do you think?’ And he goes, ‘I'm in. Two thumbs ups.’”
The American Idol judge laughed, “He gave me two thumbs up, and he was in! And I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is going to be so fun,’ because obviously he and I sharing the name Luke and, ‘Luke squared’ and ‘the Lukes,’ and you can come up with all little, mini things to call us, but the bottom line is we're on a fun song that people are going to react to and have fun and dance.”
“I hadn’t been this excited about a song in a long time,” Bryan said.
Signs Shows a Broader Side of Bryan
Bryan also discussed Signs, his ninth studio album. He said the record reflects roughly 22 years of making albums in Nashville. Bryan also shared what he’s happiest about Signs. “I think what I'm happy about this album is it checks a lot of boxes. It's got some pop sounds and country on it. It's got some classic stuff, fiddles, guitars, guitar solos, and it just covers a lot of dynamics.”
The Georgia native also revealed about one of the deep songs that’s included in his album. “It's got a song on here called ‘Killer’ that's a really deep song. Probably one of the more deeper thought-provoking songs I've ever put out in my career.”
Tune in all week to Backstage Country as Luke Bryan co-hosts with John Shomby and goes behind the songs on Signs, his biggest hits, touring plans and more.
