Little Big Town's It's a Dying Art contains plenty of emotional moments, but "Sucker for a Sad Song" has a particularly memorable story behind it.
During their appearance as co-hosts of Backstage Country, Karen Fairchild explained to John Shomby how the song came together with Ashley Monroe and Shelby Lynne. What started as a completely different writing session eventually became a song about embracing the kind of heartbreak country music does so well.
It Started on Shelby Lynne's Back Porch
Fairchild revealed that she was writing with Monroe and Lynne on Lynne's back porch when the song unexpectedly changed direction. “I went into the kitchen, came back out, and I was like, ‘I don't know, y'all, I'm just such a sucker for a sad song.’ And of course, being the writers that they are, they just started writing that. We all did.”
She added, “And yeah, I love that this one really came to life in a way; we could have taken it musically in a bunch of different directions. It could have stayed very like singer-songwriter-y-back-porch kind of thing. And it ended up becoming very cinematic.”
Little Big Town on the Foundation of ‘It’s a Dying Art’
The story behind "Sucker for a Sad Song" also connects directly to the larger philosophy behind It's a Dying Art.
The band explained that they try to capture the energy that happens when musicians are together in the same room. Sometimes that means not knowing exactly where a song is going. A song can begin with one idea and end up somewhere completely different because of the players, the moment and the chemistry in the room.
With lyrics like “If it's a rainy night in Georgia / Make it long / If it's a whiskey drink you're pouring / Make it strong / Another, ‘why you gotta go and do me wrong?’ / Yeah, I'm a sucker for a sad / Sad song,” the track perfectly encapsulates the masochistic comfort of wallowing in heartbreak.
It paints the familiar picture of someone nursing their wounds, pouring another drink, and deliberately pressing play on the saddest song they can find—because sometimes, leaning into the pain is exactly what a broken heart needs.
