Lauren Alaina Reveals How She Caught Her Boyfriend Cheating

Lauren Alaina is turning one of the most painful chapters of her dating life into a massive country singalong.

When co-hosting Backstage Country, Alaina opened up about the real-life heartbreak behind her song “Better Off,” revealing that she discovered her former boyfriend had been dating multiple women after they began messaging her on Instagram.

What started with one unexpected message eventually became an avalanche of revelations—with Alaina estimating that 40 to 50 women contacted her about the same man.

It Started With the “Hey Girl” Messages

Alaina explained that “Better Off” was inspired by the relationship she had immediately before meeting her husband, Cameron.

Although she had dated other people casually, this was her last serious relationship before settling down. The problem? She eventually discovered that she wasn't nearly as exclusive as she thought.

“He had a lot of girlfriends. I was one of many,” Alaina revealed.

The shocking discovery didn't initially come from the man himself. Instead, other women began reaching out to Alaina directly through Instagram.

It was the dreaded “Hey girl…” message—the kind that immediately makes you wonder what you're about to read.

“I got those,” Alaina recalled. She admitted that her first reaction wasn't necessarily to believe the women contacting her. She initially wondered whether the messages were coming from people who had created their own stories about him.

“At first I thought it was just people with false realities,” she explained.

In other words, Alaina thought the women might be mistaken—or making things up.

Then the messages kept coming. And coming.

“And by like the 10th or 11th gal, I was like, this is starting to be so weird,” the “What Ifs” singer admitted.

The Experience Became the Inspiration for ‘Better Off’

That emotional devastation eventually became the foundation for “Better Off.”

Alaina explained that the song captures the anger and hurt she felt during that period, even though she now knows she is much better off without the relationship. Interestingly, she admitted that she embellished some of the story when writing the song.

For example, the lyrics reference a ring, even though she and the former boyfriend were never married. Instead, Alaina took the emotional truth of what happened and combined it with where she is today.

The result is a song that transforms betrayal into an anthem of moving on.
