Kenny Chesney Calls ‘Goldfish’ His Happiest Breakup Song

Kenny Chesney has heard plenty of breakup songs over the years, but few have made him as happy as “Goldfish.”

While co-hosting Backstage Country with John Shomby, Chesney opened up about the song and the unusual mix of heartbreak, tropical sounds, and outright joy that made it stand out to him.

“The first time I heard ‘Goldfish,’” Chesney recalled, “I couldn't first of all believe how simple it was, but then how clever simultaneously that it was.”

He added, “It had this tropical island feel to it, but it was just seeped in. And country music...  it had a little Hawaiian steel guitar in it, so there was a lot of moving parts to put this song together.”

That simplicity became part of the song’s charm. Chesney pointed to its tropical island feel and Hawaiian steel guitar while noting that, underneath all those sunny sounds, the song remains a breakup track.

That contrast is exactly what grabbed him. “I've said it many times. This is the happiest breakup song I've ever heard,” Chesney said.

And he wasn't just talking about the recording. The music video leaned heavily into the song's playful personality, with Chesney and his band heading to Maui after wrapping up their run at Las Vegas' Sphere. The group arrived with specially made suits and decided to film whatever happened along the way.

According to Chesney, the shoot quickly descended into the kind of organized chaos that makes a music video memorable.

“We had so much fun doing that,” he said. “It was just chaos, and it was a lot of fun.”

The video even features a moment that makes it look like Chesney is drinking from a goldfish bowl. Shomby wondered whether there was actually water inside it. Chesney quickly cleared that up: it was an illusion. “I gave the illusion that I was drinking water out of the goldfish, out of the fishbowl. But we had so much fun doing that. You know, like I said, the song just gives so much joy from it.”
