While co-hosting Backstage Country alongside Elaina Smith, Jordan Davis gave fans a closer look at the story behind his latest hit, "Turn This Truck Around" — and it’s one that hits a little too close to home for a lot of listeners.
Always Meant to be a Single
Davis shared that from the get-go, he was certain “Turn This Truck Around” was always meant to be a single. “The day we left, my first kind of test that it has to pass is if you write a song, and we do it a lot, so, like, you write a song, you maybe listen to it when you first get the demo back. And then you kind of try to forget about it, move on to the next song. I mean, you don't forget about it, but you put it somewhere where it's like, ‘All right, when we start making a record, we'll go back, we’ll listen to these and see what raises its hand.”
He added, “And ‘truck’ was one that I could not stop listening to the demo of this song, so much so that I sent it to the band. I think the first time we played it out was Tortuga Festival. And I was kind of like, ‘Guys, this is either going to be a disaster because not only has this song not been released, like they can't even go find it. I mean, like, you know, it's, it's truly playing a brand new song. And we walked off stage that night, and my whole band was like, ‘God, dude, that has to be a single. So, yeah, we knew it pretty, pretty early on.”
Jordan Davis Opens Up About Playing a Brand-New Song
Smith asked how it was performing a brand-new song live. “We hadn’t teased it. We hadn't done anything,” Davis admitted. He also shared how it’s nerve-wracking to play a new song. “
It's definitely because once you commit to that, there’s no going back. There's three minutes and 30 seconds of like, ‘Well, first 20 seconds weren't great if we don't pick them up.’ But you know, it's not, like, ‘Hey, you know what, stop this, guys. We're not going to finish this.’ Yeah, it makes you a little nervous to always throw a brand new song in the set.”
Smith said that with Davis playing the song on a stage like Tortuga, it shows how much confidence he had in the song from the beginning.
