Carly Pearce has written plenty of songs about heartbreak, but “Same Circus” takes a slightly more entertaining—and considerably more self-aware—approach.
During her Backstage Country conversation with Elaina Smith, Pearce explained that the Honest Woman track initially seemed like it would be about recognizing the familiar flaws in the men she dated. Then she turned the mirror around.

Instead of simply asking why she kept meeting the same type of guy, Pearce realized she was repeatedly choosing them.
“I was picking the same guy over and over and over when I knew that it wasn't right,” she admitted, recognizing patterns she already knew weren't good for her.
That realization became the backbone of “Same Circus,” one of the album’s sharpest and most playful songs. Pearce describes the track as a way of making fun of herself while acknowledging a frustratingly familiar dating cycle.
The title says plenty. The circus may change its setting, but the act remains familiar.
Pearce also digs into a relatable habit: seeing someone's potential instead of the person standing in front of you. “It's that thing where I think as women, we think we can change them or, like, we fall in love with their potential, or we see a red flag and we're like, ‘It's fine.’ This was like, my ‘No more. We're done.'"

“I Really Love This Song”
Pearce revealed how much she loves the song. “I really love this song. It's one of my favorite songs. I can't believe it's never been written.” The singer-songwriter added that the track is a song about accountability—and about reaching the point where self-awareness becomes more useful than another round of excuses.
“It's kind of making fun of myself in a little bit. Like, same circus, different clown. Like, ‘Step right up, gather round, watch another one,’” she explained.
There’s something refreshing about Pearce refusing to take herself too seriously. The song gives her room to laugh at her own past mistakes rather than treating every painful experience like a tragedy.
By the time she and Smith discussed the track, both could recognize that particular feeling of looking back and thinking, “What was I doing?”
Fortunately, Pearce is now on the other side of it—and “Same Circus” lets her laugh about her wrong choices in the past.
It fits Honest Woman perfectly: honest, bruised, funny and ultimately empowering.
