McDonald County Jail Break: Inmates busted out, then tried to sneak back in


Two McDonald County inmates are facing serious charges after they busted out...and then tried to bust back in.  Lieutenant Michael Hall says Justin Forcum and Eric Bishop were being held in minimum security pods when they found a weak spot in the wall and climbed out through the ceiling and made a quick getaway.  The McDonald County Jail was placed on full lockdown this morning when the jailers heard something crawling around in the attic and two inmates missing.  Hall says they...

Southeast Kansas Daycare Shut Down


A daycare in Southeast Kansas is shut down after children were found with no one watching them.  The Montgomery County Health Department has supended the license of Ms. Jiffies Day Care Center after a complaint.  An investigator followed up and found the kids with an unlicensed supervisor and at a different location in Coffeyville.  Officials say that person was styling hair and had placed a hot flat iron near the infants.

Joplin to get 4 new softball fields


Softball players in Joplin are smiling. The Joplin City Council voted Tuesday to build some new fields.  Joplin Park & Rec Director Doug Joyce tells News Talk KZRG three fields will be built, with a fourth roughed-in at the Joplin Athletic Complex. All the fields will have lighting.  It will cost about $1.1 million to build the softball fields.  They'll be ready for play in September 2011.

Neosho business gives police a hand


Neosho's Police Department is getting help from a local business. Wayne House, owner of Spee Dee Lube, is donating up to ten free oil changes per month for the city's patrol cars for a year.  House tells News Talk KZRG, "I'm a native Neoshan and I've been in business here for 21 years.  The police department needs the help."   House says if that can help the city get back on its feet, everyone will benefit.  Neosho recently laid off ten police officers...

Webb City voters to decide on smoking ban


Webb City will have a referendum next April on whether to ban smoking in public places. Last night, the city council voted 5-3 against an ordinance banning smoking. Then a motion to let the citizens decide in a referendum tied 4-4. Webb City Mayor John Biggs broke the tie--voting for the referendum.  Mayor Biggs tells News Talk KZRG, "In good conscience, I couldn't support anything that would encourage smoking, in my opinion.  If there's anything I can do personally to discourage smoking, in any instance, I would make that vote." 
Again, that referendum on smoking in Webb City will be next April..not this coming November.

Diamond Man Accused Of Rape


A man from Diamond is arrested on Tuesday after being accused of raping a woman.  Newton County Detectives tell News Talk KZRG that the victim of the attack had injuries consistent with her story after she tried to fight off the man.  54 year old Gilbert Hagebusch is now being charged with forcible rape.  Investigators say they believe the 27 year old woman was choked and sexually assaulted at his home on North Main in Diamond.  Hagebusch is being held on 25,000 dollars bond.  A court date has not been set.

Kansas Soldier Killed In Afghanistan


A 35-year-old soldier from Kansas has been killed in Afghanistan. The U.S. Defense Department says Captain Jason T. McMahon died Sunday in Bagram after his unit was attacked with indirect fire. His survivors include a wife and two daughters along with his parents, Ronald and Sherry McMahon who live in his hometown of Mulvane.

Missouri Truck Driver Involved In Crash Killing Several People


Three people are dead after a Semi, Minivan and truck smashed into one another in southern Iowa.  Troopers say 59 year old Thomas Ryan from Osceola, Missouri was driving the big rig when it crossed the center line and hit the other two vehicles.  The impact sent everyone into a ditch where the semi and truck caught on fire.  The crash happened just after 8 am and authorities tell News Talk KZRG they're still not sure what caused Ryan to drift into the other lane.

House Destroyed By Fire: Firefighter Injured in Route To Help


A Carl Junction Pumper Truck flipping Monday on its way to a house fire puts one crew member in the hospital.  The Highway Patrol says the firefighter was airlifted from the scene but was found to only have minor injuries from the crash.  The rollover crash happened when the truck was racing to assist with a fire on 20th street near Joplin and the pumper rolled when it hit a ditch.


A Joplin family is without a home after losing everything on Labor Day. Crews called to West 20th street were met with roaring flames and black smoke boiling out of the house. Fire Crews were able to put everything out in half an hour but say that didnt stop it from burning to the ground. Fortunately no one was hurt in the blaze. Authorities tell News Talk KZRG that it all started from a car inside the garage but the investigation continues.

Monett Has Slow Recovery From Tornado


The twister that hit the southwest Missouri town of Monett on May 13 wasn't much by Tornado Alley standards, but that doesn't matter to the owner of the local Pizza Hut.

Pat Hopkins had hoped to rebuild and reopen the restaurant by Labor Day. But all she has for now is the parking lot where the Pizza Hut stood before it was flattened by the F1 tornado.

Hopkins says she's hopeful of straightening out issues with her insurance company and getting started soon on rebuilding.

The small tornado that tore along U.S. 60 also ripped the roof off Big Baldy's Backwoods Barbeque. Steve Hayes says the twister did about $150,000 worth of damage, but he managed to reopen fairly quickly and business is up from last year.

Massive Traffic Pile Up Blamed On Smoke


Smoke on the highway is being blamed for a massive Labor Day accident in southeast Missouri that involved nearly 20 vehicles and left 33 people hurt.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a large brush fire along Highway 60 near Dexter in Stoddard County on Monday created smoke so thick that drivers couldn't see. The result was a chain-reaction wreck just before noon that involved 18 vehicles.

Four people had serious injuries. Two were hospitalized in Cape Girardeau, Mo., one in Poplar Bluff, Mo., and one in Memphis, Tenn.

Highway 60 was closed for more than six hours after the wreck.

Children Seriously Injured After Being Hit By A Jeep


Two kids were air lifted from a campground site in Barry County on Labor Day after they were hit by a Jeep while riding their bikes.  15 year old Chanse Nelson from Purdy and 11 year old Brayden Ruddick from Cassville were seriously  injured when troopers say they missed a stop sign in Eagle Rock and flew right into the path of the vehicle.  The accident happened just after noon at the Big M Campground.

McDonald County Inmate Recovering After Attempted Suicide


An inmate found hanging in the McDonald County Jail is said to be recovering after officers took quick action and were able to get him to help.  The Sheriff tells News Talk KZRG that Kevin Scott tried to comitt suicide after being convicted of raping children and recommended that he receive 5 life sentences for the crime.  Prison officials say Scott tied a sock around his neck and was found unresponsive, lying on his mattress.  He still awaits formal sentencing.

Northwest Arkansas Officials Investigate Teens Death


The investigation continues in the death of a teenager in Northwestern Arkansas.  Conservation officials say the 19 year old man was found dead on Beaver Lake at Horshoe Bend.  Friends of the victim say he had been riding in an inner tube before he died on Sunday but authorities wont say if he died of natural cause or an accident.

Fire Chief Hit By Truck While Gathering Donations


The Carl Junction Fire Chief is said to be doing ok after a pick-up slammed into him near Stone's Corner in Joplin.  Chief Bill Dunn was raising money as part of the MDA Boot Block Sunday Morning when a truck turned the corner and hit him.  Witnesses say it was an accident and the driver didnt see Dunn when he started heading west.  Firefighters say the Chief was shaken up but will be allright.

Verona Man Arrested After Marijuna Was Found On His Front Lawn


Lawrence County deputies arresting one man in the KZRG listening area after they found nearly 80 marijuana plants.  Sheriff Brad Delay says this is another case where they found the drugs growing out in the open.



Delay says the owner eventually came out of the woods to face authorties and was put in hand cuffs.  The pot was growing around 6 feet tall and the sheriff believes its worth around $8,000.

Officers Break Up Prostitution Ring


Springfield police arrested nine men during a prostitution sting at an area park.  Officers say the undercover operation was organized in response to several complaints about prostitution in the Grant Beach Park area.  The men arrested were cited for patronizing prostitution after allegedly soliciting undercover officers.  The sting operation was paid for with part of a Community Development Block Grant being used to fund additional enforcement in some neighborhoods.

Four Plead Guilty In Fatal Stabbing


Its four guilty pleas in a deadly stabbing case out of Miami, Oklahoma.  The group was charged with first degree murder after officers say they were responsible for the death of their friend when they broke into a home and the owner killed one of them last February.  23 year old Jake Payton and 22 year old Jessica Logan, 23 year old Michael Watson and 19 year old Jerrod Russel plead guilty to reduced charges of second degree murder and will most likely see 15 years behind bars. In each case full sentences were shortened and parole is only possible after they serve 85 percent of their time.

Webb City Trucker Killed in Labor Day Weekend Crash


A violent crash early Friday morning leaves a Webb City Truck driver dead.  43 year old Donald Ehrmantrout was thrown from his 18 wheeler when it flipped near Mansfield on Highway 60.  Troopers say Ehrmantrout went off the side of the road and then yanked it back into the median before rolling the Mack Truck.  He was life flighted to a local hospital but died a few hours later because of his critical injuries.

Judge Denies Restraining Order on Adult Business Restrictions


New restrictions on sexual businesses in Missouri will take effect Saturday after a judge denied a request to block the law.

Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem said Friday that sexually oriented businesses likely will suffer economic loss as a result of the law. But he says that alone does not affect the legal analysis of the constitutional claims.

Fatal Accident Reported


A rollover crash in St. Clair County leaves one man dead.

Troopers say 53-year- old Edwin Baker from Lowry City never made the corner on Route C, sending his car off the road and straight into a ditch. Baker was thrown violently from the car and was pronounced dead where he fell.

The accident happened moments after 5 am Thursday morning.
