Joplin officials celebrated the dedication of the City's new Sunshine Lamp Trolley this morning. Public Transit Coordinator Robert Lolley tells News Talk KZRG why they needed to replace the original trolley, which was running since 2007.
"We put an awful lot of miles on it. It's got over 198,000 miles on it and has provided more than 227,000 rides. It just got to the point with maintenance costs where we just have to replace it."
The new trolley features the ability to lower itself to make it easier for riders to get on, as well as more comfortable seating. 80% of the trolley's $390,115 price was paid for through a grant from the Federal Transportation Administration, with the rest coming from the Joplin Transportation Sales Tax.
