The VFW 7479 Post in Girard voted last night to merge with Parsons. It'll have to be accepted by the Parsons group, as well as the headquarters in Kansas City before coming official. Quarter Master Gene Leigh says Girard has 37 members; only five or six ever come to the meetings, and only two actually doing all the work. He says with all the work they do within the community, it's too much for it to only be left up to a handful of men. Leigh tells News Talk KZRG the alternative to merging.
"Well we voted yes, but that has to be accepted too. If the Kansas VFW doesn't accept this, our post will be abandoned."
If the merge is approved, the two posts won't be combined until after July. With this possible merger, there's also a question of what'll happen to the helicopter that's sitting in the town's square. Many residents have voiced their disapproval for it's removal, but Leigh says they're not the bad guys here.
"We want it to be here, and the people in the community thinking that we're the bad guys; we've been asking for help for a long time and we didn't get it. We didn't get it from our members, and we didn't get it from the community."
The VFW would like to turn the helicopter over to Girard's American Legion. If they accept it, it must also be approved by the Crawford County, the Kansas VFW Headquarters, and the US Defense Department.
