A martial arts studio in Joplin is giving back in a big way. Universal Sport Karate is offering a free self-defense class for kids aged 5-12 years old this Saturday. The classes will be held from 2 to 6 p.m at Southwest Missouri Bank's Community Center at 7th and Duquesne. They'll have four 45 minute sessions that begin at the top of each hour. Sensei and studio owner Gage Hanlon tells News Talk KZRG why he's offering the class.
"Due to the unfortunate events that have been happening in the news lately with Hailey Owens and the other abductions and murders of the kids, I'd like to give back to my community. I decided to go ahead and see if I could get organized, and it just so happened that we could do it as soon as we did."
Hanlon even encourages parents to get involved.
"We actually want the parents to be practicing with their kids. We're going to show your kids how to escape from that grab, and then you'll take that material home with you so you at least have some very basic material that very well could help them in a situation."
There's no need to RSVP. He says they'll be able to have about 40 kids in each class that'll fill up on a first come, first served basis. You can find more information on their Facebook page; www.facebook.com/UniversalSportKarate.
