Officials: Accused Killer is a Springfield Teacher

A 45-year-old man accused of murdering a 10-year-old Springfield girl is a faculty member at the Springfield School District. Officials have confirmed that Craig Michael Wood of Springfield is an in-school suspension teacher at a middle school. Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams says Wood was arrested Tuesday night, several hours after an Amber Alert was issued for Hailey Owens:

"That suspect was arrested, and booked into the Green County Jail. We investigated the area around the residence in the 1500 block of East Stanford Street. That search resulted in evidence of foul play."

Williams explains how law enforcement got on to Wood's trail.  "There were a couple of very good witnesses who actually witnessed the abduction, provided information regarding a vehicle and a license plate number, tracked that to the owner of the vehicle, and from that, we were led to our suspect."

Wood was charged Wednesday with first degree murder, which is punishable by death or life in prison without parole or pardon.
