Area Lawmaker: Child Welfare Caseworkers Trained Improperly

The head of a House subcommittee on child abuse says the top issue he wants to deal with in the 2014 session is how the state's child welfare caseworkers are trained. State Representative Bill Lant of Pineville says the people that have to investigate abuse aren't being trained properly.

"They're not properly trained. They're not adequately prepared for the horrors that they need to be able to face. We need to have maybe a lab course where, when they're students, they get out of the school and into the field where they can see some of these things, so they can know how to handle them."

Lant says reports of abuse and neglect are not treated the same from county to county in the state, and Missouri needs some sort of statewide standard. It'll be one of his priorities for the 2014 Legislative Session.
