New Mexico Man Makes Plea Deal over Disabled Girl's Rape

A New Mexico man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing a developmentally disabled 8-year-old girl in Joplin.

Fifty-nine-year-old Robert L. Newton pled guilty Monday to first-degree statutory rape, first-degree statutory sodomy and felony failure to appear in court.

Prosecutors say Newton, from Las Cruces, New Mexico, was visiting Joplin in 2010 when the sexual abuse occurred. The abuse was discovered when the girl reported it to officials at the Children's Center in Joplin.

Newton was charged with failure to appear when he didn't show up for his trial last year.

Newton's plea deal limits his prison time to 15 years on each of the statutory counts and two years on the count for failure to appear. The sentences will run concurrently.
