It was a special day for one fourth grade student at West Central Elementary School. Karen Alvarado was honored with the Scholastic READ 180 All-Star Award. When Karen moved to the United States 2 years ago, she didn't speak a word of English. With the help of her teacher, Susie Bradley, she is now able to read above her grade level. Bradley is nothing short of impressed with Karen's hard work.
"Her persiverance has shown because she cares and I am just so amazingly impressed with her. She comes in at recess to do extra work because she wants to."
This is the second year in a row that a Joplin student has been honored with the award. It's given to only 3 students in the entire country for overcoming personal and academic obstacles to meet their goals.
