Empire Working to Restore Service in Tornado Zones

"We have about 1,700 customers without service. Approximately 400 of them are in the Baxter Springs area, and 1300 are in the Quapaw area."

That's what Empire District Electric spokeswoman Julie Maus says about the Baxter Springs and Quapaw areas after last night's tornadoes. Maus tells News Talk KZRG crews are working feverishly to restore power.

"We believe we'll be able to make very good progress today and tomorrow, so it's likely that we'll have most of those customers restored by the end of the day tomorrow, weather permitting."

Maus adds that Empire suffered some damage to their transmission systems, and 200 power poles were either damaged or destroyed by last night's storms.

Update 4:45pm: As of early this afternoon, Empire said some 1300 customers were still without power.
