$150,000 Loss in Joplin Public Works Department

The City of Joplin has released new details on an investigation into the city's Public Works department that has so far led to the reassignment of former director David Hertzberg. An email from Public Information Officer Lynn Onstot to News Talk KZRG says an audit has revealed unbilled items over the past 14 years have resulted in a loss of around $150,000 in revenues, mostly made up of enforcement and building permit fees. She adds that City officials are turning down interview requests as the investigation continues.

Full statement from Lynn Onstot, City of Joplin:

"An internal audit in the Building Division revealed the loss of approximately $150,000 in revenues. This amount includes unbilled items over the past 14 years of code enforcement fees valued at  $110,000, and $40,000 of unbilled building permits fees.

After the preliminary audit, it does not appear that there was any criminal activity, but to be sure, I have asked the Police Department to conduct a criminal investigation into this matter.

Because this is an ongoing personnel issue, we are unable to give any further details at this time."
